I've taken advantage of crossing so many books off my reading list the past couple months. Jake and I have both been reading all of these pyschological thrillers. Here's what I thought of these buzzed about books! If you can't decide what to read first, I listed my favorites at the bottom (so the books are in reverse order of favoritism), although I enjoyed all of the books.
Listing this one first because it was my least favorite. I thought it'd be great because Kerry Washington is making a series/movie about it but I was bored. The story is about a mom group and something bad happens to one of them while the rest try to solve it. Interspersed is all their dramas of having a newborn and I personally didn't really like reading about staying up all night, feeding, and the mom guilt they had. I understand they are going through hard times and I definitely think if you have been in their shoes with a newborn you possibly may like it, but for me I just wasn't that intrigued.
I liked this book because I love reading mystery books about missing people. A mother lost her daughter suddenly and years down the road -after she finally moves on with her life - she's finding out clues as to what happened. It was short enough and thrilling enough that I kept turning the pages and was done in two days.
I love this author's books, and so when she released this book a few weeks ago I was so excited to get a copy. If you love psychological thrillers, this is a natural choice for you. It's about a young woman who gets a letter asking to visit Mrs. Westaway's will reading, however she doesn't know this lady but is desperate for cash. She finds herself in messes along the way and learns about her tragic family history. It's not a super "dark" book, but the characters are interesting, the storyline is interesting, and you will enjoy reading it. I finished it in four hours because I wanted to know the ending so bad!
This is a creepy book about an old girls boarding school that was horrible, and spooky for multiple reasons. The story alternates withstorytellers from the present near the abandoned school and murders that happened and then past where mysteries are also occurring. Obviously there's links between the two time periods. It's hard to describe without giving it away, but it was a fun read.
This is a great Whodunnit novel that was fun to read and was unique because it all happened on a cruise ship! I was hooked the entire time and did not predict the ending. This is the first Ruth Ware book I read, and I loved this book so much I have been trying to cross all of her books off my reading list.
In this book an agoraphobic (a "shut in") spies on her neighbors and witnesses something (or does she?). This book was amazing not only because of the psychological/thriller storyline, but also because it did an excellent job of making you feel what agoraphobia is and understand the struggles this woman faced with her mental health as well. Often times I was unsure if I should be trusting the narrator, which made it an interesting read. The author of this book struggled with misdiagnosed bipolar disease for 15 years, and although that's a completely different illness, I think he was able to use his experiences to help describe situations very well for us through his main character.
I had this on my list for a few months and finally picked it up. It was hard to read at first, a lot of tragic events and drama. The book is never dull, the plot advances quickly. The story is about a family navigating their adult world in their small town after something awful happens to them as children. The father is an attorney defending "the guilty" and so the book made me think a lot about how even guilty are still people and it also describes trauma/events/family life that can cause people to commit crimes. I was a little shaky after finishing it, it made me feel so strange inside with so many thoughts. I can't talk about the main storyline without giving anything away but trust me, this is a great book!!
This was a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick, and I'm so glad I read it. This book is about a lovely couple who goes on their honeymoon in Bora Bora and finds something in the water that changes the course of their lives. It involves murder, drama, jail, the mob, and they were innocent until finding that something in the water. A big mess unravels and I found it so enjoyable to read. The author's writing style is as if you are her best friend and she's telling you the story of what all happened. I think that made it so fun!
I read 1/3 of it and then started my ICU month so I haven't picked it up in a while. What I read of it was excellent!!
Also on my list that I did not get to:
In a Dark, Dark Wood (another Ruth Ware)
The Favorite Sister (I LOVED this author's first book The Luckiest Girl Alive, apparently The Favorite Sister may not be as good)
Bring Me Back (I LOVED B.A. Paris's first two books this and this and have heard great things about this book)
The French Girl (Have heard chatter of this as "best psychological thriller of the year", so I want to check this out!!)
Shoot me a message on instagram if you have any others I should read, or if you liked any of these!
