step 3 study plan

I've shared my study plans for Step 1 and Step 2 and finally here's the last USMLE Step study plan for Step 3.

USMLE are medical boards exams and I took the first two in medical school but the last one we take during our intern year of residency.

This one is also much more simpler to study for so, my study plan was not as thorough.

If you're reading this for tips on how to study, also keep in mind that by this point in time you know yourself best and you know what best works for you on how to prepare for these exams.

The exam is a seven hour exam the first day and a nine hour exam the second day. The first day has more general knowledge including biostatistics and the second day has more clinical knowledge + virtual patients you have to take care of. I took the first part on a Monday and the second part that same Friday.

I used UWorld (as always) and Master the Boards Step 3 for my materials.

I gave myself two months while working in rotations that had "regular hours." The last week I used five days of vacation time and studied half days during that time. Using an 8 - 10 week plan (which most people will tell you is too long to study!) I divided out the questions I needed to do per day and pages I needed to read per day so that I had gone through Uworld and through my book once by three weeks prior to the exam.

The first time I went through UWorld I wrote a little note about every question I missed in a separate notebook (I wrote things down I learned from each question). During my first pass at Uworld I also "marked" the questions I missed or the ones I'd like to see again (which was almost 3/4 of them, but not the ones that were easy). I finished my first time through Uworld with about three weeks left before the exam and then spent those last three weeks working to get through all my "marked" questions and I skimmed my notebook 2-3 times during the last three weeks.

I also read Master the Boards and took notes on the key points in a word document. I finished the book about three weeks prior to the exam. I printed my notes and divided them into four sections and just alternated skimming one of those four sections a day until the exam (and highlighting key points I always forgot).

Highly recommend buying the Uworld Biostats! That is ALL you need to know for biostats, and you can get through it in a day. I took notes on this and just quickly reviewed them every day prior to the exam for a week.

Prior to day two I did about eight of the CCS cases on Uworld and I probably should have done more, but it is fine. The most important part is to be familiar with the computer interface!

Happy Studying!
