Trevi Fountain

We were fortunate to have the Trevi Fountain all to ourselves this special morning. If you've ever been to this fountain, or if you google any image, you'll see the masses of tourists crowding around at almost every hour of the day - even night time. We woke up right after sunrise, walked over while everyone else was at breakfast, and really appreciated this amazing beauty. I couldn't believe how BIG the fountain was, even in my photos it seems smaller. I'll never forget this morning, and after we snapped a few photos and threw our pennies in, we sat down and watched a few other tourists wander in for their photos. We even saw a bride and groom! We came back later in the evening to sit on a step (with the hundreds of visitors and pickpockets) and enjoyed a cold Peroni while watching this beauty lit up at night.

The original Trevi Fountain served Rome as a source of fresh water for more than 400 years, it was one of the oldest water sources in Rome. As you can see now the water is an unnatural turquoise, but it makes a beautiful photo. Tradition has you throw one coin over your shoulder for a return to Rome, and two coins for love. There's the equivilent to about $3700 thrown into this fountain every single day! The money is picked up every night and given to an Italian charity that provides food for needy families in Rome.

Look how beautiful that sunrise is hitting the Travertine ("from the Tiber") stone!
