day in the life: allergy and immunology

It's about time for another medical school post, am I right?

Fourth year of medical school allows for freedom to choose what clinical rotations you want to get more experience with and decide which months you need more flexibility for travel to residency interviews. So far I've had a month of vacation ( where I took step 2CK and visited Italy), two months of anesthesiology, research month, nd Allergy and Immunology. Here's what a day in the life in the Allergy and Immunology clinic looks like. 7:30 AM : Arrive to clinic and preview today's patients 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM See patients In this clinic we managed everything from seasonal allergy relief, immunotherapy allergy shots, asthma, eczema, food allergies, immune system problems, drug allergies, and mast cell disorders. We always had a variety of cases, but since it was ragweed season, many patients came in for some extra help relieving those symptoms. My attendings had a lecture prepared a few times a week and worked to tailor my education to experiences in the OR I might have as an anesthesiologist (since this is what my career will be). I ended the rotation by presenting a half hour lecture to the attendings about intraoperative anaphylaxis. I learned so much and really enjoyed some more clinic exposure and, as always, continuing to work on taking a good history and performing physical exams.
